Working on my “WetWare”

Well, a few weeks ago at BarCampRDU, Andy Hunt of the Pragmatic Programmers talked about writing three pages longhand every morning and how it was “good for your brain.”  I think that the reasoning is that is occupies some of the “logic” part of your brain in such a way that the “creative” part of your brain is given a chance to speak.  The idea is that you will be already be writing so hopefully you will be able to get some of those utterances down.

So, here I am, with my Mont Blanc hacked Pilot Dr. Grip Gel pen, in my new office I just moved into, writing long hand into a notebook, hoping for something prophetic to come out.

I had been putting off doing the real investigation work for my new job until I actually started my new job.  So for the last few weeks I have been playing with Ruby on Rails.  It has been fun, but not really related to what I’m going to be working on in my new job (or is it?).

Man, I have been typing stuff for too long, this writing is cramping my hand pretty good!

My manager for you new job is actually out this week, which is probably good because I plan to spend this week reading almost exclusively.. I just read the SCA white paper and am about to move on to the SDO one, and then I’ll read about the Simplified BigBank example.

I have been writing down terms that I have been coming across that I think I’ll need to know more about or at least understand what they really are.  So far I have: BPEL, WS-Policy, JCA/JMS, dependency injection, EIS Service, Spring/EJB 3.0, JAX-RPC/JAX-WS, and Apache Axis.

The short version of what I think my job is going to be is to implement a REST Binding for Apache Tuscany.  It is funny, the beginning of the SCA white paper talks about its reason for existing is to make writing SOA applications really easy.  Then the paper goes on to talk about a bunch of concepts that just make your brain glaze over.  I’ll keep reading, but so far none of it is sounding so “easy.”

Three pages is starting to feel like a lot.  This notebook is college ruled, so maybe I should just hold myself to a page and a half or something.

So, although I have a huge learning curve in front of me, I am pretty excited about my new job.  The other “fun” thing is that about the time that I get good at this Tuscany stuff it will likely be time for me to look at something new.  That is one of the reasons I took this job, the ability to keep working on and learning different things without having to move jobs.  Hopefully that will be how it actually pans out.
